A milling cutter is a tool used on a milling machine to remove material from metal blocks. Burrs come in single or double-ended varieties, made of carbide steel and coated with titanium nitrate. End mills are versatile and can cut holes, slots, edges, and more when paired with a router.

A milling cutter is a tool used on a milling machine, a machine found in a metalworking shop that is used to remove material from a block of metal to turn it into a finished part. It is one of the tools used on the router to make a particular type of cut.
Burrs come in single-ended and double-ended varieties. A single end has only one useful working end; the other end is just a plain shank to hold the tool in the holder on the router. A double-ended one has two useful working ends. When one end becomes dull and no longer useful, it can be installed so that the opposite end can be used.

These tools are made of carbide steels, with the cutting surfaces sometimes made entirely of carbides. It is also common for drills to be coated with a very thin layer of titanium nitrate. Titanium nitrate is a gold-colored coating that prevents metal chips being removed from the part from sticking to the tool, reducing its life and cut quality. End mills come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. To those unfamiliar with metalworking, it will look like a strange drill bit.

While this tool can be used to drill a hole, its function is much wider. In many ways, an end mill router is very similar to a router in woodworking. It can be used to cut blind holes or slots, chamfer edges, cut a flat edge, and punch holes in a block of material. It can also be used to make bearing and cylinder raceways. You can’t make a square hole with a router bit, but you can make a square post. When paired with a router, it’s perhaps the most versatile machine in the shop.
