An excavator grapple is an attachment used on construction vehicles to grab and lift material. It is powered by oil and can come in different styles and strengths depending on the project needs and budget. The grapple is typically attached to a block called a hook that hangs from a part known as the rotator.

An excavator grapple is an attachment used on construction vehicles such as backhoe loaders and excavators. Its main function is to grab and lift material. When in action, the most common style of gripping usually looks and works like a jaw opening and closing. It is typically attached to a block called a hook that hangs from a part known as the rotator.

The grapple is located at the end of the extendable arm of the construction equipment. An operator, seated in the cab of the vehicle, manipulates the excavator’s grapple. It is generally used to move objects such as logs, pipes, earth and stones.
When not attached to a machine, a typical excavator grapple looks more like a bird’s claw. There are usually about three or four claw-like teeth on each side of the forceps. The attachment is attached to the excavator via two or more bars that sit above it. There is a zipper that holds both sides of the grappling hook together and allows it to open and close.

An excavator grapple is powered by oil that comes from a hose that extends the length of the construction vehicle’s outrigger arm to the operator’s cab. There it attaches to a lever that powers the accessory by managing the flow of oil. Another tube is usually required to operate the rotator, which allows the gripper to turn and otherwise maneuver. These pipes are commonly referred to as oil loops.

Different styles of excavator grapples are available, depending on the requirements of a project. Some consist of a larger half, shaped like a deep scoop, and a smaller half that looks more like a claw that is used to push objects into the larger part and then hold onto it. Other grippers consist of four claws arranged in a cross that grip an object from above and carry it suspended in the air, rather than holding it inside a deeper claw.

Excavator grapples are available in different sizes and strengths that are geared to different project needs and budgets. Heavier, sturdier grapples are typically used for projects such as land clearing and breaking up. Lighter grapples are mainly used for lifting and moving materials. There are also less elaborate grapples that can still handle heavy loads, but not as much material because they’re only made of claw-like teeth.
