What’s an Impeller?

Impeller pumps use blades to push fluids at high pressure and velocity through pipes, making them ideal for manufacturing and personal use. They allow for high pressure and volume across multiple outlets, require little maintenance, and can operate under extreme conditions. Modern advancements have led to benefits in various aspects of life.

An impeller is a blade that operates inside a piece of pipe that causes water to be pushed through it at high speed. The impeller acts much like a jet engine and pushes fluid through a tube at a higher pressure. In manufacturing, impeller pumps are used to push fluids to and from workstations and machinery at great pressure and velocity. The impeller pump pushes water out of the rotating vane and against the pipe wall to build up pressure.

Many items in common use today use an impeller pump. Personal watercraft, such as jet skis, use a fan to push water out the back of the machine. The turbocharger on cars and trucks uses a fan to compress incoming air and force it through the induction system. Many underground water systems use one to pump potable water up and out of the well and into the home.

Using the high pressure characteristics of an impeller pump, a smaller pump motor and piping can be used to transport a large amount of water or fluid. By pushing the fluid through a high pressure pipeline, a high velocity stroke of the fluid can be achieved.

This process also allows a manufacturing site to maintain high pressure and volume across a large number of outlets. A manufacturing plant must compensate for the pressure loss that occurs when a number of outlets draw fluid from the system simultaneously. Many machines are designed to run at a predetermined pressure in order to function properly. Using the proper system, multiple or all job sites can be operated simultaneously without a drop in fluid pressure from the supply line.

These pump systems are generally quiet and trouble-free, and require little maintenance. The drive unit is easily removed from the pump unit for replacement, enabling service with limited interruptions. Many innovations in composite design make it possible to pump components capable of operating under extreme conditions for extended periods of time without failure. In addition, the sealed bearings allow for extended operation without the need for greasing or lubrication.

Modern requirements for lubrication and transmission of manufacturing fluids have led to benefits in many aspects of life. Pumping stations around the world are benefiting from the design of higher flow pump styles. Consumers use this technology to relax and play games in many cases without a second thought.
