What’s an Input Mask?

Input masks define allowed contact types, minimize data entry errors, and automatically convert input into acceptable formats. They can also trigger automatic filling of fields and limit characters entered.

An input mask is an expression that helps define what type of contact is allowed in a given field on a model. The idea behind the input mask is to keep the data entry process somewhat smooth and minimize the chances of entering wrong data into the field. In some cases, input field entry may be configured to allow automatic field entry as a way to save time and resources.

Creating an input mask occurs during the computer programming process. Fields on a template are established with specific control values. The values make it impossible to enter data that is not compatible with the values. For example, a field that contains an input mask that only allows letters will automatically reject numbers.

Another common application of an input mask has to do with automatically converting input into an acceptable format. For example, the template may require that the date field on the template specify a structured format such as date/month/year. Even if the person entering the date into the field follows a month/date/year format, the input system reads the entered data and automatically converts it into the correct form.

Automatic input is also extremely useful in many applications. In this scenario, the input mask is structured to trigger an automatic filling of one or more fields, based on the data entered in a previous field. For example, when someone enters a first and last name in those fields, the input mask reconnects this information to the previously processed data and automatically enters that data in one or more subsequent fields. As a result, you only need to update a few fields and save your changes, rather than re-entering each data to create the new file or document.

It’s also not uncommon for an input mask to place a limit on the number of characters that can be entered into the field, as well as requiring a minimum number of characters. This can be especially useful when the file needs to contain data such as credit card numbers, phone numbers, and similar information. This protection will warn the person entering the data if too many characters have been entered, or if not enough characters have been entered to meet the minimum number. This minimizes errors and avoids the need to fix the file later.
