What’s an Integrated Chipset?

An integrated chipset is a chip built into a motherboard that can refer to graphics or general processors. It is less powerful than a separate card for graphics-intensive applications. Integrated audio devices are also common.

An integrated chipset is generally a term used when referring to computers to refer to a type of chip that is built into a motherboard and comes standard with the board. While it can have several possible meanings, the most common uses of the term refer to the graphics processors and general processors on a computer. Whenever one of these types of processors is incorporated into the design and construction of a motherboard, it is usually referred to as an integrated chipset. A graphics chipset is usually less powerful than a separate card that must be installed on a motherboard.

The various chips and device boards used inside a computer are often separate parts that need to be installed on the motherboard inside the computer. While the motherboard itself typically consists of various circuits, ports, and connectors soldered onto the board, many devices must be connected to the board afterward. However, whenever a processor comes as part of a motherboard, it is usually referred to as an integrated chipset and is usually chosen by the motherboard manufacturer to work well with the board.

There are typically two main types of chipsets that a person will encounter when purchasing a motherboard. The first is an integrated processor, which is often soldered onto the board and includes the motherboard’s processing north and south bridges. These usually work with a central processing unit (CPU) and work together to process data while a computer is in use. This type of chipset should be considered by someone building a computer to ensure compatibility with whatever CPU they are looking to use.

The other common type of integrated chipset, and the type most often considered by computer users, is the video or graphics processor in a computer. A chipset on a motherboard typically allows a user to connect a monitor and display graphics of a fairly simple nature. However, for running graphics-intensive applications, such as computer games and three-dimensional modeling software, an integrated chipset is usually not powerful enough. A separate graphics card is often installed on the motherboard to override the chipset and provide more processing power.

There may also be an integrated audio device on a motherboard. This is usually referred to as integrated sound or an integrated sound card, however, rather than an integrated chipset. For most computer users, this type of built-in sound is usually sufficient and is often less of a concern than the built-in graphics chipset.
