Microsoft’s Internet Security and Acceleration Server is a web proxy server and firewall that monitors network traffic, caches web content, and allows policy-based management. Available in Standard and Enterprise editions, it provides security, performance, and cost-effective remote access to web application servers.

Internet Security and Acceleration Server was adopted after Microsoft® Proxy Server 2.0 and is part of Microsoft’s .NET framework. The server works as both a web proxy server and a firewall. The Internet Security and Acceleration Server firewall monitors the traffic of packets, circuits and applications in a network. Its web caching feature stores and makes available all routinely visited web content in an effort to reduce traffic and offer faster access to requested data.

Microsoft® Internet Security and Acceleration Server allows network administrators to formulate policies for managing network usage based on user, group, application and type of content being served. The server is designed for use with Windows 2000® and later. A software development kit is included with the server software to give programmers the opportunity to add their own features.

The server software is available in both Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. The Standard Edition is a smaller software suite, capable of supporting up to four processors. This edition is commonly used by small businesses with networks that don’t have large needs. The Enterprise Edition is for large-scale networks and provides functionality for a complex and varied network architecture. The Enterprise Edition also supports more than four processors.

Internet Security and Acceleration Server is especially useful for network administrators who want more security and performance at a lower cost than other server suites. The server is able to minimize the threats posed by viruses and hackers through proactive usage policies and a rigorous and comprehensive firewall. The server quickly alerts the administrator of any suspicious activity and performs its own reconnaissance on data transferred across the network.

Content can be published for remote access securely and cost-effectively with Internet Security and Acceleration Server. The software allows you to make web application servers available for remote access to users who are not part of the administrator’s network. The server screens all requests arriving on the network and tries to authenticate users, including by monitoring encrypted traffic arriving on the network. The software features automated publishing that allows you to quickly upload and serve content.

Companies use Internet Security and Acceleration Server to communicate with their branches securely and without using too many network resources. The software provides “http” compression and a virtual private network feature that allows companies to easily expand the size of their networks. The content caching feature of the software also helps limit the amount of time and bandwidth businesses use to facilitate communication across their networks.
