What’s an IP Surveillance System?

IP surveillance systems use Internet Protocols to transmit images or video captured by a camera across the Internet or a network, allowing for easy access and storage. It is similar to CCTV but does not require a bank of monitors and can be accessed from any computer with proper credentials.

An IP surveillance system uses the Internet Protocols (IP) to transmit images or video captured by a camera or camera system across the Internet or a network. The data can then be received at a remote location or accessed from any computer with the proper credentials to access the system. This allows you to easily view, save, and copy data captured by your surveillance system using various computer programs, and helps prevent the need for potentially bulky video equipment and vast libraries of surveillance tapes. An IP surveillance system uses Internet networks to make images easily accessible to a number of different locations, with varying levels of security.

IP typically refers to any type of system that uses the Internet to allow data to be transmitted over large distances. In an IP surveillance system, one camera or several cameras can be configured and then the captured images can be archived or accessed in various ways. Many systems use digital video recorders (DVRs) to capture images as the camera records them, so they can be accessed manually or from a remote connection over the Internet. Other types of IP surveillance systems will use live feeds instead, allowing a remote location to view images in real time and potentially save segments of video to a computer hard drive.

In many ways, an IP surveillance system is similar to a traditional closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance system. Older CCTV systems would allow a video image to be captured and then sent that image to banks of monitors and recorders. These recorders would store video images on videotapes, and the tapes were often held for a set amount of time before being recorded by new images. The monitors in a CCTV system would allow video to be viewed and played back in real time.

An IP surveillance system, however, does not require a bank of monitors for viewing. Instead, the system is given an address and made accessible via the Internet, allowing images to be viewed on any computer connected to the Internet. An IP surveillance system will usually be protected with security features such as passwords and firewalls to prevent unwanted users from accessing the images. This type of system allows a person to easily access cameras on her property from anywhere with an Internet connection, allowing for situations such as a laptop being used by someone on vacation to monitor the security of her property.
