Isolation transformers isolate unstable frequencies within a signal, transforming them into a clear output. They can be used in audio and video transmissions, as well as in electronic devices to stabilize circuits. Standalone units can process multiple input signals and isolate irregularities over a wider range of bandwidths. The type of irregularities that can be processed depends on the frequencies the transformer is designed to pass through.

Isolation transformers are designed to isolate unstable frequencies within the bandwidth of a signal. They capture these unstable frequencies as their own signal input and generate a clear and crisp signal frequency from these unstable frequencies. Then they provide the transformed signal as output. Since an isolation transformer is designed to isolate only the unstable frequency within its bandwidth, if the transformer cannot locate an unstable frequency, the entire bandwidth can pass through the transformer without suffering any form of transformation.

In a number of different transmissions of video and audio transmissions, effects can occur in the system which can cause unwanted noise or disturbance within the transmitted or received images. To eliminate these effects, the technician in charge of maintaining these types of systems can install an isolation transformer. However, the use of an isolation transformer is not strictly limited to the audio and video fields, although they are more commonly used there.

Because an isolation transformer has the ability to transform an unstable or distorted input signal into a clear one, the devices are used in a number of different electronic devices. Inside the devices, the isolation transformer serves as a means of stabilizing the entire circuit. They can be used as internal devices, when integrated directly into the circuitry of a device, or they can be built as a stand-alone unit, limited only by manufacturer limitations and technical specifications.

One benefit of a standalone unit is that most newer models are capable of processing more than one input signal. They can take these multiple signals and isolate any irregularities in them, typically over a wider range of bandwidths. The transformers that are built into the circuitry of some devices, however, are designed to operate only within the parameters of that single device and only on the bandwidths at which the device operates.

The type of irregularities within an input signal that an isolation transformer can process depends on the frequencies it is designed to pass through. The frequency bands that they are designed to isolate are then transformed into lower or higher frequencies, whatever bandwidth is acceptable for the device. There is always a range of frequencies within a signal, whether it’s a voltage signal, current signal, or broadcast signal, that makes up the frequency bandwidth.
