What’s an IT Contractor?

An IT contractor is an independent professional who provides IT services for a client for a specific period. Businesses may hire them temporarily or for ongoing services. They can also assist with system migrations and may be considered for permanent positions.

An IT contractor is a qualified professional who chooses to perform important IT functions for a client as an independent contractor. The IT contractor usually works under the auspices of an employment agreement with the client and is available for a specific amount of time in exchange for completing specific tasks within that time period.

There are several reasons why a business may choose to hire an IT contractor rather than hiring a full-time individual. In some cases, using the IT contractor is a means of temporarily ensuring competent IT support during an interim period. The period can occur when the company’s IT technician is away from work for an extended period of time, such as on leave or extended illness. The IT contractor steps in and does day-to-day support until the full-time employee returns to duty.

Other times, a business may choose to go with an IT contractor who provides support to several small businesses. In exchange for a monthly fee, the IT contractor provides a list of ongoing services to the business, with the proviso that features that are outside the scope of the monthly contract are subject to additional fees. Smaller companies with fairly simplistic computer systems may find this solution more cost-effective than having a full-time person supervise IT functions.

An IT contractor may be tasked with working with the existing IT team in order to manage a mass migration from one system to another, especially if multiple locations are involved in the process. The cost of the IT contractor is offset by the savings in both the time it takes to fully complete and implement the migration, as well as the reduction in the time systems are down during data transfers and other issues that often occur with a system migration.

Some companies have been known to bring in IT contractors as a means of finding a permanent information technology professional to join the team. At the end of the contractual period, the company can decide whether to extend a permanent job offer to the contractor, if the relationship has proved to be stable and positive for both parties.
