What’s an LCR meter?

An LCR meter tests electrical impedance, including inductance, capacity, and resistance. It measures an object’s ability to hold an electric charge and identifies the exact opposition of the current. The device under test (DUT) is introduced to the LCR meter and tests are conducted in various industries. The test can be conducted quickly and LCR meters are available in analog and digital formats.

An LCR meter is a device used to test the electrical impedance of equipment. In operation, it can identify the measure of an object’s resistance to stationary electric current. This is very useful when dealing with alternating current (AC). Determines the relative change in magnitude of repetitive changes in voltage and current known as amplitudes.

Inductance is one of the main properties that an LCR meter will test. Inductance is a change in current flow through a circuit, and some devices such as a resistor prevent that change. This is called electromotive force. Since electric currents produce magnetic fields that reduce the rate of change of the current, the LCR will measure the magnetic flux ratio.

An LCR will also measure an object’s ability to continue to hold an electric charge. This is known as capacity. The tool can test the amount of charge stored at a specific point known as the electric potential. Typically measured in volts, it shows the exact static charge in the object’s electric field.

When measuring rigorous electrical resistance, the LCR meter will help identify the exact opposition of the current. A component that contains a uniform width will have strength proportional to its length. This is useful for determining the correct design of the elements involved in the circuit.

The component that is introduced into the LCR meter is known as the device under test (DUT). DUT tests are conducted in a variety of industries to ensure that an electrical product is functioning properly. For example, if a video game system rolls off an assembly line, an LCR can be used to do a final check of the system. Electricity will be supplied to the device and the meter will test the product to ensure it is working properly.

The complete LCR meter test can be conducted very quickly depending on the device being tested. Basically, after the AC voltage source is energized, both voltage and current are measured. While this isn’t a foolproof option for testing fully assembled items, it works very well on individual components.
LCR meters are available in a variety of formats, both analog and digital. Analog testers are cheaper and can be built using basic components if needed. Digital testers, however, provide more accurate readings and come in smaller sizes and weights.
