In many cases, the intern may need to obtain certain certifications or licenses, and preparation for these exams will be done in a classroom on dry land or on the offshore platform. Practical training is also an important component of the internship, as the offshore trainee must gain a certain number of hours with hands-on experience on an operating oil rig. Machine operation, analysis, management, welding, mechanical maintenance and much more can be performed by any of the trainees on the platform.
