What’s an Overhead Winch?

An overhead winch is a machine that uses a pulley and cable to lift and move heavy objects. It can be mounted on a trolley system or fixed in one place. Safety precautions must be taken when operating the winch, including not exceeding its weight capacity.

An overhead winch is a device mounted to a ceiling or overhead track used to lift and/or transport heavy objects. A winch system generally employs the use of a pulley, around which a cable is wound numerous times. When the pulley moves in one direction, the cable is pushed out, and when it moves in the other direction, the cable is retracted. The size of the cable will depend on the size and capabilities of the machine, and the amount of weight the aerial winch can safely lift will also vary based on these variables.

Factories and warehouses often have an overhead winch to move stored items safely. It is common for the aerial winch to be mounted on a trolley system which works in conjunction with a steel rail; this allows the winch to move back and forth along the track, making the system useful for moving objects from one location to another. Some winches are also fixed in one place, although these designs are usually only useful for lifting up and down rather than hoisting and moving to a different location. If the aerial winch is stationary, it must be mounted to a solid, stable surface such as a steel beam or other type of roof beam.

Operating an aerial winch isn’t particularly difficult, but it can be dangerous if the machine is not used properly. The end of the cable is usually fitted with a hook which can be attached to the loads to be moved; this hook must be secured properly to avoid unbalanced or unstable loads. The operator will use a hand control to feed the cable, retract it and move the trolley along the tracks. It is important to know when to slow the unit down and when to stop it altogether to avoid damage to lifted objects or equipment or surrounding people. Many winch systems are equipped with emergency stop switches to help prevent accidents.

When an aerial winch is purchased new, it will be advertised based on its weight capacity. This capacity is the maximum amount of weight the winch can safely carry, and the winch user should never exceed this weight when loading the system. If the system is overloaded, the hoist itself can break and the load can become unstable, leading to a dangerous situation for the operator or any bystanders.
