What’s an Ovulation Tracker?

Ovulation trackers can help couples plan intercourse to increase chances of conceiving. There are two types: urine tests and saliva tests. They detect the luteinizing hormone surge that occurs before ovulation, but false positives can occur. Saliva tests show a fern-like pattern when ovulation is imminent.

Those trying to conceive can get assistance from an ovulation tracker, which shows the user when they are likely to ovulate. This type of tool allows couples to plan intercourse accordingly to make sure they give each other the best chance of conceiving naturally. There are two main types of ovulation trackers. One uses urine to test for signs of ovulation, while the other uses saliva.

An ovulation tracker works by detecting the hormone that is released just before ovulation occurs. It’s called a luteinizing hormone or LH surge, and it usually occurs 12 to 36 hours before the egg is released. While this method of detecting ovulation is usually accurate, occasionally it is possible to experience a surge in LH without an egg being released, in which case the woman would get a false positive from the ovulation tracker. For this reason, it’s a good idea to use other methods to predict ovulation at the same time.

Urine testing often works similar to a pregnancy test in that the sensor looks for a certain hormone before giving a positive or negative answer. While a pregnancy test looks for human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, an ovulation detector looks for luteinizing hormone, or LH. It’s important to read the ovulation predictor’s directions before using it, although most of them recommend using early morning urine when testing, as it is the most concentrated type.

A saliva ovulation detector is generally known as an ovulation finder. With this type of test, the user places a sample of saliva on the microscope slide provided, waits for it to dry, and then looks at the pattern created by the saliva. If the slide shows nothing or several unconnected dots, ovulation is not on the horizon. If the pattern resembles a snowflake, ovulation could occur in the next few days. An obvious fern-like pattern is a sign that the woman will be ovulating within the next couple of days, meaning it’s the best time for intercourse at that point.

Unlike some free ways to detect ovulation, an ovulation tracker can predict when it will occur before it happens. Taking your basal body temperature is one way to predict ovulation for free, but since your temperature usually only rises after ovulation has occurred, it’s best to show the overall pattern. It usually takes months to take your temperature every day to accurately detect a pattern so that ovulation can be predicted before it occurs. For this reason, many women prefer to purchase an ovulation tracker while waiting to see a trend using their temperatures.
