The Al Andalus Ultra-Trail in Spain is considered one of the toughest ultra races in the world.

An ultramarathon is a sporting event in which participants run a distance that is greater than the traditional marathon length of 26.2188 miles (42.195 km). Ultramarathon events take place all over the world and attract top athletes. Most events involve a specific duration, while other events have a specific time in which the riders try to cover more ground than their opponents.

There are a number of variations on the ultramarathon, including a double marathon, a 24-hour race, or multi-day races. The events are grueling, not only because of the distances the runners have to cover, but also because of the difficult weather conditions and rugged terrain. Most ultra races take place on courses that go through forests, mountains, dirt roads and rocky slopes. Athletes often must overcome extreme temperatures that cause heat stroke or frostbite.

Most ultra races have aid stations located throughout the course. These pit stops are often used by athletes to rest and recover. Athletes also stock up on supplies, food, and water at these rest stops.

Many competitors are unable to complete the ultramarathon due to injury or exhaustion. Usually only the most conditioned athletes finish the race. Some people prepare for years before attempting an ultra run.

The Comrades Marathon is the oldest and longest ultramarathon in the world. The race is held in South Africa and attracts nearly 12,000 runners each year. Athletes test their endurance on the 55.92 mile (90 km) course. South Africa also has another ultramarathon called the Two Oceans Marathon, which has a course of 34.79 miles (56 km). A third African ultramarathon is held in Morocco.

There are several races in Asia that cover a longer distance than a regular marathon. Races have been held regularly in both China and Singapore. Nepal also has several breeds including the Everest Ultra.

One of the toughest ultra breeds in the world is found in Andalusia, Spain. The 230 km (142.92 mi) Al Andalus Ultra-Trail hosts the race over a period of five days. This stage race is considered one of the most competitive in the world. Europe hosts several other races, including the 103.15-mile (166 km) course around Mont-Blanc, which is the highest mountain in the Alps.
