Antifreeze spray is a can of compressed gas used for various purposes, including pet cleaning, hair styling, and cleaning small areas. It can also be used by chocolatiers to construct chocolate sculptures. However, some cans contain propellants that can be abused for recreational drug use.
Antifreeze spray is a hand-held can of compressed gas that can be used to spray a high-pressure stream of gas from a nozzle. Although often called “compressed air,” antifreeze spray doesn’t contain air; instead, it usually contains a blend of fluorocarbons. This gas is typically very cold when released, which gives the product its generic name. The cans come in a variety of sizes and are advertised for a range of uses, from hair maintenance to cleaning pets and pretty much everything imaginable in between.
Pet cleaning is one use for this compressed gas which comes out at extremely low temperatures. Using gas from the freeze spray can, soft or otherwise unmanageable stools can be nearly frozen, making them much firmer and easily scooped up with a tissue or shovel for easier disposal. This can be especially helpful if a pet has eaten something that upset their stomach and made cleaning up more difficult. It’s worth remembering, however, that freezing products do little to remove odors or stains.
The freezing spray can also be used in hair styling. In this application, the spray serves less to freeze and more to move the hair. The compressed gas can help create body and lift the hair, while allowing the stylist to control the direction and application of the gas stream. The spray is sometimes used with another styling product such as hairspray or gel to help hold the shape of the hair after spraying.
The relatively high rate of gas emitted from such cans also makes them excellent for cleaning dust from small areas such as inside curio or computer cabinets. For this purpose, many computer supply stores or larger retail stores with computer departments sell cans of antifreeze spray to aid in cleaning and maintenance. In this application, the product should be used in short bursts as longer sprays can cause a brief build-up of moisture which can damage sensitive electrical systems.
Among some of the more unusual users of frost spray are chocolatiers, who use the cold spray in constructing large chocolate sculptures. Two separate pieces of chocolate can be heated in certain areas to make the chocolate soft. The fusion areas on each piece are then merged. When you apply an antifreeze spray to the area, the cold solidifies the chocolate and can effectively melt the two pieces into one.
It is important to note that many antifreeze spray cans contain propellants that can be abused for recreational drug use. To help prevent such actions, some manufacturers have added chemicals to the gas inside the cans that have a very unpleasant taste and make the product unpleasant to inhale. This also helps discourage children from accidentally inhaling large quantities of propellants.
