Aqua Detox is an unproven alternative medicine treatment that claims to detoxify the body of toxins. The treatment involves placing feet in a plastic bowl filled with salt water and an electrical current. The water changes color, but experts say this is due to rust from electrodes, not toxins. The treatment has been accused of being a scam, and no medical associations endorse it. Advertisements for the treatment in the UK and US have been forced to remove claims of curing diseases.

Aqua Detox is an alternative medicine treatment that is supposed to detoxify the body of viruses, bacteria, heavy metals, and various other toxins. None of the medical associations in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom have endorsed or shown that any of the claims made by companies that produce aquatic detox kits are supported or proven. Producers of Aqua Detox devices have been accused of being scammers for offering a safe detoxification method that some say actually does nothing at all.

Aqua detox devices are plastic bowls or baths that are filled with salt water and then charged with an electrical current. A person seeking a body cleanse, natural detox, or any other form of detox treatment places their feet in the bath. Over time, the water in the bath changes its color to brown or dark red, sometimes resembling cranberry juice. The producers of these detox products claim that the color of the water comes from toxins that are excreted through the pores of the person’s feet.

It is said that the aquatic detox system can have the same effect that a holistic detox diet can have, but in much less time. Sometimes these products are also advertised as “ionic cleansers” or “ionic foot baths.” The original system was developed by Mart Staggs, a British citizen who holds two naturopathic degrees from an unaccredited American correspondence school.

Experts like Ben Goldacre, a doctor and journalist who specializes in debunking false scientific claims, have found no evidence to show that Aqua Detox does anything to detoxify the body of dangerous chemicals, bacteria, or various other toxins. According to scientists who have studied the system, the coloration in the water is actually caused by the formation of rust from electrodes that are placed in the salty water. Tests have found that there were no toxins of any kind in the water and that the water will change color even if no one steps foot in the basin.

Manufacturers of aquatic detox systems have also been forced to change advertisements in the UK, removing claims that the device can cure brain tumours, foot ailments and other ailments both moderate and severe. In the United States, all advertisements for the system must come with a disclaimer that nothing claimed by the manufacturers of the aqua detox system has been scientifically proven to cure or treat any disease or ailment.
