What’s Arch. Design?

Architecture design involves the layout and construction of spaces, with elements including design and manipulation of light. Ancient cultures created functional spaces for religious purposes, while Persians focused on displaying wealth. Greek and Roman architecture shifted to civic concerns, leading to modern architecture that considers the environment. Today’s architects specialize in specific types of architecture and must consider form, structure, space, mass, materials, and cost. Prospective architects should pursue education and work experience to achieve a career in architectural design.

Architecture design refers to the design and layout of actual spaces. Architecture encompasses many different elements including construction, design, and the manipulation of light in relation to shadow. Throughout history, architects have found ways to create functional and practical spaces using whatever materials are available.
Originally, architecture was born out of necessity. Because ancient cultures needed a way to worship the religious deities they revered, Egyptian and Mesopotamian architecture directly reflected the relationship between people and ancient religions. Most of the buildings constructed during the reign of these empires were meant to pay homage to the sky. While the “architects” as we know them did not exist during the construction of these buildings, the idea behind creating impressive and functional spaces was present.

Unlike Egyptian and Mesopotamian architecture, Persian architecture was designed solely to display the wealth of the state. It was important to the ancient Persians to create buildings that would impress guests. Again, through the need for shelter, the ancient Persians contributed much to urban design and architecture by building huge cities. Once the Greeks and Romans rose to power, architectural design shifted from a religious or pragmatic focus to one based on civic concerns.

Thanks to Greek and Roman contributions, architecture began to take on new shapes and forms. The buildings constructed in Greek and Roman times were massive, imposing, and nearly every structure tested the boundaries of architecture as the world knew it. Today, architecture design is often based on modern concerns such as the environment.

The term architecture in relation to our world today encompasses many different specialized fields. Today’s professional architects focus on specific types of architecture, rather than architecture as a whole. A landscape architect designs landscapes exclusively, while a church architect works only on religious structures. This was not the case in the time of the ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians or Mesopotamians, when all building designers created any type of structure, regardless of the actual purpose of the structure.

Today’s architects must consider form, structure, structure, space, mass, materials and cost before designing any building or space. Therefore, an architect must have a good understanding of mathematics, engineering and science. This is exactly why most architects spend many years working in the architecture field before working as independent contractors.

Prospective architects should consider enrolling in a four-year undergraduate program, followed by a graduate program specifically focused on architecture. Through proper education and work experience, it is possible to achieve a career in architectural design. From residential architecture to industrial architecture, architectural design has evolved significantly over the centuries.
