The term “army personnel” refers to active duty and reserve soldiers of different ranks, involved in land operations. Professional armies consist of full-time soldiers, while non-professional armies rely on conscription. Personnel management is important, and military personnel can include doctors, psychologists, and lawyers. China has the largest military in the world, with 2.5 million soldiers in its standing army and 7 million including reserve soldiers.

Army personnel typically refers to people conscripted into a country’s military. What exactly constitutes military personnel varies from country to country. However, the term normally implies active duty soldiers and reserve soldiers of all different ranks. The notion of military personnel does not usually designate other branches of military service, such as the navy or air force, although this definition also varies by country.

The word army comes from the Latin word armata, which means something that is armed. Army is traditionally used to refer to the group of individuals involved in conducting land operations. Land operations mean movements and tasks with a distinct military objective, performed almost entirely on the ground. According to the unique needs of the theater of operations, armies usually require their own specific personnel to accomplish their objectives. Training in the various aspects of land operations is usually required for all successful Army personnel.

Professional armies usually consist of soldiers whose full-time job is to be a soldier; this is also known as having a standing army. Army reserves are usually only called into active duty in times of war or natural disaster. Professional armies are an ancient concept, found for example in ancient Sparta, which had its own standing army as early as the 6th century BC. In contrast, non-professional armies, while also having full-time professional military personnel, rely on conscription of civilian soldiers, serving in the regular army. Non-professional armies may also consist entirely of civilians who are only called into service in emergency situations.

Since professional armies essentially serve as a source of employment, it is very important that they consider personnel management, as any other company would. Personnel agencies such as Masterson Personnel and Page Personnel in the US work with the US Army to find potential Army personnel. Due to the heterogeneous nature of modern military conflict, there are many possibilities for employment in the military. While the backbone of any military remains its soldiers, military personnel can also include doctors, psychologists, and lawyers.

As of 2009, the largest military in the world belongs to the People’s Republic of China. China is estimated to have 2.5 million soldiers in its standing army. When considering reserve soldiers, the Chinese military is estimated to be 7 million soldiers.
