Basil rice is a popular dish made with basil leaves and various other ingredients. It is easy to prepare and can be very nutritious. Basil has strong antioxidant properties and is a natural deterrent against microbes and viruses. When cooking with basil, it is best to use fresh leaves and add them last to the dish. Basmati rice is a good choice for this dish.

Basil rice is a rice dish prepared with basil leaves; this type of rice dish, using different recipes, is prevalent in many different cuisines around the world. The herb combination of basil and rice can be quite tasty, with the basil lending a mild flavor to the rice. A variety of greens, spices, and nuts are often added to basil rice to make the dish tastier and more nutritious.

Cooking with basil is not only a great choice for gourmets, it is also particularly healthy. The herb, which has long been used in many health remedies in the Indian Ayurvedic system, is well known for having very strong antioxidant properties and for being a very effective deterrent against microbes and viruses. Regular consumption of basil rice and other basil side dishes can prove to be very beneficial in maintaining good health.

When cooking with basil, the herb is typically used fresh and is added last to the dish; it is advisable not to cook the basil leaves for an extended time as this could ruin the overall flavour. Basil doesn’t keep well, although it can be packaged in plastic and refrigerated for a couple of days. It may be a good idea to grow the basil plant in the vegetable garden and use the leaves as required.

The basil rice dish, in its rather simple form, is very easy to prepare. In addition to rice and basil, other ingredients used may include ginger, garlic, cinnamon, cumin, bay leaves, cloves, cardamom, oil, salt, green chillies, peas, onion, tomatoes, coriander, mint, mushrooms, beans, masala and cashew nuts. You can use any type of rice, but Basmati rice is particularly good because of its long-grained, subtle flavor.

The rice is immersed in water for about 15 minutes while the rest of the vegetables are washed and chopped. The oil is heated in a pan and cumin seeds are added. The other herbs, onions, garlic, ginger and chiles are added and sauteed. Next the chopped vegetables are added, followed by the masala, soaked rice and water. The mixture must be stirred well during cooking. The dish will be ready in 10-20 minutes. Basil rice can be garnished with coriander and cashews and should be eaten when hot.
