Batalk is a form of communication used by adults to talk to children in a comforting way, using a higher pitch and stretched vowel sounds. It can help establish a strong relationship between caregiver and child and aid in language development. It can also be used between adults to express attraction or towards animals to calm them.

Batalk is a form of verbal expression in which a person who is not a child communicates or talks with a child in a way that is supposed to be comforting or reassuring. The pitch of voice used in this type of communication is often slightly higher than in normal speech and vowel sounds can be stretched somewhat to create sounds often described as cooing. Batalk is often used by parents or caregivers to reflect the sounds made by infants or toddlers and to talk to children in a way that is calming and song-like.

Also sometimes referred to as “mothers,” infant speech is often considered an important part of communication and relationships between children and caregivers such as parents. While the use of baby talk may seem somewhat immature, the tone of voice used is often effective enough to get a child’s attention and focus. The focused attention that occurs between a child and caregiver during this process can be important in establishing the relationship between parents and a child. The accurate tones of such communication and the act of reflecting the sounds back to the baby can further strengthen this connection.

Batalk can also be an important component in language development for many children. While the exact nature and effectiveness of this type of communication in language development has been debated, some research indicates that infant language development is assisted by such talking. At the very least, batalk is likely to help children understand how language is used to communicate between two people, as a child often “talks” to a caregiver and the caregiver responds. This teaches the child that verbal communication is a process whereby one party talks while the other listens, and then each party switches roles.

There are also some settings where the batalk can be used without the presence of an infant or toddler. Two adults may use “immature” tones of voice and language when communicating with each other to express mutual attraction. This is probably an unconscious way each person expresses trust and a feeling of nurturing towards the other through the use of such verbal cues. Child talk can also be used by an adult toward an animal, especially a pet, to help calm the animal or express a similar sense of “comfort” toward the animal. It can also be used in a mocking or derisive way by one person towards another, usually to express that the recipient is being childish.
