Berber fleece is a lightweight, warm and soft textile material often used for household items and clothing. It is made by weaving yarn into cloth and brushing it with wire brushes to create a soft looped pile. The fabric is designed to wick moisture away from the wearer’s surface and synthetic materials such as polyester are used to create it. Care instructions vary, but it can generally be machine washed and tumble dried on low heat.

Berber fleece is a very light, warm and soft textile material. It is often compared to fur due to its incredibly soft texture when well cared for, along with its insulating properties. Many household items are made from Berber wool, including warm coats and blankets, jackets and socks for use around the house. Many people wear garments made for layering, as the textile is lightweight yet highly insulating.

To make berber fleece, the yarn is woven into cloth, which is brushed with wire brushes to bind the material together and fluff it up. The resulting material has a soft looped pile, with large air pockets that enhance the insulating properties of the fabric. The pile is cut to create a uniform length, and the fleece is ready to wear. Synthetic materials such as polyester are most often used to create the fabric, which tends to be strong, elastic, and colorfast.

Like all textiles, Berber fleece will eventually form small “pills” or clumps of fibers on the surface of the garment. Pills form due to friction, and while the fibers used to make this fabric are designed to resist pilling, even the best engineering cannot completely defeat this tendency. The pills can be cut periodically if they do not fall out naturally. People can also refresh the pile of a garment by gently brushing it with a bristle brush.

In addition to keeping you warm, clothing made from this fabric is also designed to wick moisture away from the wearer’s surface. It also won’t absorb moisture as easily as some natural fibers, since synthetics are water resistant. Although this type of fleece cannot be used as a rain coat, it can be worn under one to wick moisture away from the body and prevent the garments underneath from becoming saturated.

Care instructions for the berber fleece vary. As a general rule, it can be machine washed in cold or lukewarm water with a mild soap. Can generally be tumble dried on a low heat or hang dry. The material should not be left hanging, as it will stretch the fabric and distort the garment. It’s also best to fold it up and store it flat. Not all fleece fabrics are berber fleece, and care instructions for different fleeces vary. People should make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as they can be different depending on the materials used to make the fleece and the manufacturing technique.
