Bergamot tea confusion arises from two different plants used in tea blends. Citrus bergamia is used for flavored teas, while Monarda didyma is a herb used for poultices and herbal tea. It has antiseptic and carminative properties, and can improve cold and flu symptoms. Bergamot oil has various uses, including as an antidepressant and antispasmodic, but should be consumed with caution if taking other medications.

Bergamot tea can cause confusion for some people because there are two different bergamot plants used in tea blends and the citrus smell of the two plants is also very similar. May refer to tea made from the bergamot plant, also known as Citrus bergamia or Oswego tea. Citrus bergamia originated in Italy and is usually the essential oil derived from the plant’s orange peels that is used in flavored teas. In contrast, the herb bergamot, or Monarda didyma, is a perennial plant found in North America and is a member of the mint family.

Monarda didyma bergamot tea is also known as Oswego tea or bee balm tea. It is called Oswego tea after the Native American tribe that imbibed it. It was also used as a substitute for black tea during the colonial era in the United States when traditional British tea was boycotted. This was done because the flavor of the tea is quite similar to that of Earl Gray tea.

Native groups also often used the herb variety for poultices due to its antiseptic properties. Bergamot herbal tea was often used to treat mouth and throat infections. Contains thymol, which is an aromatic and antiseptic oil also found in thyme plants.

The herbal tea version can also be used as a carminative. Carminatives help reduce the amount of gas in the gastrointestinal system. Not only does this reduce flatulence, but it can also relieve acid reflux and help prevent heart burns.

This type of tea is also used to improve cold and flu symptoms. It has been found effective in reducing nausea, chills, and sinus congestion. Bergamot herbal tea should be avoided during pregnancy or during menstruation because, in high doses, it can cause uterine contractions. This tea should not be consumed daily, but should be enjoyed in moderation for up to ten consecutive days.

Bergamot peel oil is often added to traditional black tea as an essence. This is most often used in Earl Gray and Lady Gray teas. Earl Gray is a blend of black tea enriched with bergamot oil. Lady Gray also has black tea with bergamot oil, but often includes Seville and lemon flavors as well.

Citrus bergamia oil also has a wide range of uses. It is believed to have antidepressant, digestive, antibiotic and antispasmodic qualities. Patients suffering from nervous disorders such as anxiety, fear and night terrors may find that it can soothe these issues. Patients who have skin disorders may find it helpful to apply the oil topically, to benefit from its antiseptic and antifungal properties.

Bergamot oil contains bergamottin, a chemical compound similar to those found in grapefruit juice, which can affect how some medications are metabolized. This alteration of drug metabolism caused by certain foods is often referred to as the grapefruit effect. Before consuming bergamot oil, consult a doctor or pharmacist if the patient is taking any other medications.
