BOPP film is a clear plastic sheeting used for wrapping and packaging. It has unique properties such as shrinkage, clarity, and sealability, making it suitable for various industries. It can be metallized and produced in different sizes and treatments. BOPP film is heat sealable, has low tackiness, and is non-toxic. It provides an effective barrier against foreign particles and is a conventional packaging choice for food products.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene film, or BOPP film, is often found in small or large rolls of clear plastic sheeting used in wrapping and packaging. This popular and widely adopted stretched polypropylene is suitable for a variety of industries and products. Its unique properties include shrinkage, clarity and sealability, enabling numerous applications in industrial, commercial and domestic use. Common products made with this material include Mylar® and shrink wrap.

This film is produced in many different sizes and treatments for the end products, from stationery to snack bags. It can also be metallized for additional uses and applications. On smaller scales, it is used as flower sleeve wrap, pressure sensitive tape, and even clear bags.

The transparency of this film is a result of the orientation of the polypropylene molecular structure in two uniform directions, which also improves the molecular strength and self-adhesion while minimizing the stretch properties. Different manufacturing processes produce flexible plastic sheets of various sizes, thicknesses, and finishes. With increased tensile strength, the film provides an attractive and stable support in which to hold products for shipping, as well as crisp, clean packaging for products. The film also provides an effective barrier against foreign particles; this feature, in addition to being waterproof, makes it a conventional packaging choice for food products.

Another advantage of the bioriented polypropylene film is its high resistance to welding, even with a low welding pressure. Its symmetrical polymer structure offers a higher melting point for convenient machining. A low initial temperature and large window for sealing make it a versatile material for inconsistent handling with minimal damage. A further feature of the film is its resistance to dulling which can result from evaporation and humidity.

Providing a heat resistant barrier, bi-oriented polypropylene film is heat sealable. This allows it to do lamination in print and gift wrapping, as well as wrapping large products on shipping pallets. These heat resistant properties allow for faster performance when loaded into high speed form, fill and seal (FFS) machines.

Besides this feature, BOPP film possesses lower tackiness and easier jaw release than other types of packaging. Because polypropylene carries some health concern regarding toxic byproducts, the minimal amorphous fraction of biaxially oriented polypropylene film means reduced xylene extractables. That is, it is typically a nontoxic, nonadhesive film; produces few irritants on inhalation or exposure.
Stable surface properties result from low blooming and low molecular weight amorphous or other additives. Produced through extrusion, injection and stretch-blow molding methods, the surface of the material is subjected to treatments to allow the application of inks and varnishes. This versatile and ubiquitous film has become a common product for wrapping and packaging, fulfilling many roles.
