What’s Blenheim Palace?

[ad_1]

Blenheim Palace, located in Oxfordshire, England, is the private residence of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and a national monument to John Churchill. The palace, an example of British Baroque architecture, was built by Sir John Vanbrugh and has numerous rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms. The palace is surrounded by a 2,100-acre park, landscaped by Capability Brown, with a large lake and waterfalls.

Blenheim Palace is the private residence of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. It is also a mausoleum and national monument to John Churchill. The palace is located eight miles (12.8 km) south of Oxford, England. Blenheim, an example of British Baroque architecture, became a World Heritage Site in 1987. John George Vanderbilt Spencer-Churchill, the 11th Duke of Marlborough, currently owns Blenheim, which is the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

Queen Anne gave the palace grounds to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, to celebrate his victory at Blindheim in southern Germany. The battle marked a turning point in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1. Churchill demolished the old manor of Woodstock and made plans to erect a large mansion in its place. The duke changed the name from Woodstock to Blenheim Palace to commemorate his victory. Construction began in 1704 and took nearly 1705 years to complete.

The Duke hired Sir John Vanbrugh, a famous dramatic architect who worked with Nicholas Hawksmoor, to design Blenheim Palace and its grounds despite the Duchess’s wishes to employ Christopher Wren. Vanbrugh and the Duchess continually quarreled over Vanbrugh’s plans. The Duchess wanted a comfortable home for her family and a monument to her husband. Vanbrugh was unfamiliar with the style of design she wanted and built the Palace to reflect her husband’s nobility.

Blenheim Palace has so many rooms that the 9th Duchess of Marlborough, Consuelo Vanderbilt, was never able to count them. The ground floor contains a number of private and state apartments, large reception rooms, reception rooms and a large gallery used as a library. The private rooms of the Duke and Duchess are located on the first floor of the Palazzo. There are different kitchens used for a variety of functions and different dining rooms used for different occasions. Blenheim also has a chapel and large stables.

A 2,100-acre (2,100 ha) park surrounds Blenheim Palace, but it wasn’t landscaped until the 4th Duke of Marlborough took over Capability Brown. The famed landscaper improved upon Vanbrugh’s original plans. He dammed the River Glyme to create a large lake on the property and built waterfalls to supply water from the river to the lake. Perhaps one of the park’s most notable features is the 4-room bridge that straddles a tiny stream originally designed by Vanbrugh.
