Brownie frosting comes in various flavors, with chocolate being the most common. Buttercream frosting is a popular choice, but healthier options like low-fat cream cheese can also be used. Fudge, fondant, and whipped cream can also be used as frosting.

Brownie frosting is a topping used on brownies, which are a chocolate, cake-like dessert. There are a variety of different frostings that can be used on brownies, although most are variations of the buttercream frosting, which contains butter, sugar, cream, and sometimes egg. Chocolate is one of the most common flavors for brownie frosting, although peanut butter and vanilla also pair well. Buttercream frosting adds a lot of sweetness to brownies, but it also adds fat and calories, so some cooks prefer to use frostings made with healthier ingredients, such as low-fat cream cheese.

One of the most common types of brownie frosting is a chocolate flavored buttercream frosting. To prepare this type of frosting, equal parts of butter and cream are heated in a pan and mixed with sugar, chocolate and vanilla. These ingredients are baked together and spread on top of the brownies. This type of frosting stiffens as it cools, so it needs to be slathered on top of brownies while still hot.

Other variations of buttercream brownie frosting can also be used. Blending peanut butter, caramel, or butterscotch chips into the butter, sugar, and cream mixture will create frostings with these flavors. You can also add additional vanilla or white chocolate to make a vanilla-flavored brownie frosting. Adding raw eggs to any of these types of buttercream frosting will make them richer, although only eggs that have no chance of Salmonella contamination should be used.

Fudge can also be used as a brownie icing. Any type of fondant can be used, although chocolate is the most common. In order to prepare these types of frostings, butter, sugar, corn syrup and shortening are combined with the chocolate and allowed to cool and placed on top of a prepared tray of brownies. Though they’re less used, ganaches, fondants, and frostings can also be used to frost brownies.

Healthier versions of brownie frosting can also be made. Beating reduced-fat cream cheese with sugar and vanilla will create a creamy, slightly tangy frosting that complements the flavor of the brownies well. Whipped cream can also be used as a type of frosting and is often beaten with a hefty amount of sugar before being layered over the brownies. It is also possible to add melted chocolate to one of these glazes.
