Bug out refers to the evacuation process during a disaster. Planning an escape route and having a survival kit with food, water, clothing, medication, and first aid supplies is essential. The term means escaping a life-threatening natural disaster, and being prepared is always a good idea.

Many people have heard the term “bug out”. In many settings, “bug out” is simply a slang term for walking away from a certain position or situation. However, in recent years, bug out has taken on a special meaning, having to do with the evacuation process during an impending or recent disaster.

Of course, evacuating early in a natural disaster is always a good idea, but this particular form of initiating a bug requires some planning and preparation. Here are some tips for preparing to evacuate or go out when conditions threaten human life.

An essential part of any bug out operation is planning an escape route. Many coastal jurisdictions in the United States have procedures in place that provide for an orderly evacuation using the country’s interstate system and state highway and highway network. Often these require the conversion of major roads into one-way streets leading away from the area that is about to suffer some sort of disaster. The conversion of all roads into one direction of travel helps to get as many people out of the danger zone in the shortest possible time. Any effective troubleshooting plan will ensure that the evacuation is conducted with order and precision so that loss of life is minimized.

Another important component of the troubleshooting process is providing the supplies needed to get people through the immediate aftermath of a disaster. For example, many people who live in areas prone to hurricanes and tornadoes always keep a survival kit on hand. Sometimes referred to as a bug out bag, these kits will contain items that will make survival more likely even in the event of major damage. Often, these kits include a full set of basic camping gear, including tents, sleeping bags, and propane or butane cooking stoves. Drinking water and food that can be prepared without heat are essential.

In general, it’s a good idea to have enough water and food on hand to make it through the seventy-two hours if possible. Extra clothing is also a big part of your bug bag, as are many over-the-counter medications and any prescription drugs you need. Of course, a first aid kit is important, as are radios that can be operated with a hand crank. Flashlights and candles may also be included in your insect elimination kit.

At one point, “to bug out” was slang for escaping. In our world today, however, the term is more closely associated with escaping some sort of natural disaster that could be life-threatening. Since most of the world is prone to one type of disaster or another, it’s a good idea to always be prepared to escape if necessary.
