Chromium plating is a process of depositing a thin chrome layer onto metal for decoration or protection. The process involves degreasing, cleaning, smoothing, pre-treatment, and etching. Properly done, chrome plating can last for many years with minimal maintenance.
Chromium plating is a process which involves the electrodeposition of a thin chrome veneer onto an underlying metal. Sometimes used for decorative purposes, chrome plating can also act as a layer of protection. Often times, chrome plating is applied to metal objects when there is an increased chance of corrosion occurring.
The actual chrome plating process involves five basic steps. In the first phase, particular attention is paid to the metal object which must receive the galvanic treatment. Chemicals will be used to degrease the metal, helping to ensure the surface is free of components that could cause the plating to fail. Along with the degreasing process, thorough cleaning of the surface will also help remove any residual residue, such as tiny dirt particles.
For the third stage of the plating process, the underlying metal will undergo a series of treatments to smooth the surface. By making sure the surface of the metal is as smooth as possible, the plating will maintain a higher degree of integrity for a longer period of time. After ensuring that the surface is smooth, the metal is placed in a vat which is filled with a pre-treatment solution and allowed to gradually heat up to the ideal temperature to receive the chrome plating.
In the fifth and final stage the plating process begins. This essentially involves filling the vat with the chromium components and allowing the compounds to etch the surface of the metal. The residence time of the metal in the tank depends on the degree of thickness desired for the chrome plating.
When prepared to prevailing industry standards, chrome plating can withstand a great deal of exposure for many years. Metal bumpers on motor vehicles are a prime example of plating that will hold up for decades, with nothing more than general maintenance. Likewise, chrome faucets and other accessories will also maintain an attractive appearance for many years with only the basic care required.
