Chronic bad breath is caused by a buildup of bacteria in the mouth, often due to cavities, gum disease, or sinus infections. It can also be caused by a high-protein diet, smoking, or alcohol-based mouthwash. Preventative measures include regular dental check-ups, tongue scraping, and drinking water.

Chronic bad breath, more commonly known as chronic bad breath, occurs when a person emits a foul-smelling odor from their mouth for an extended period of time. They typically can’t stop the smell with routine toothbrushing and flossing. Although millions of people suffer from chronic bad breath, many don’t realize it until someone informs them, politely or rudely, that their breath stinks. Chronic bad breath results from a variety of causes. Fortunately, there are also several ways to treat and prevent chronic bad breath.

The main cause of chronic bad breath is a buildup of bacteria in the mouth. Usually the source of the bacteria is a cavity, tooth abscess or gum disease, such as gingivitis. Routine cleaning of your teeth by a dentist will prevent these conditions from occurring and therefore reduce the likelihood of developing chronic bad breath. As a general rule, it is recommended that most people visit their dentist at least twice a year.

Often, chronic bad breath is a symptom of a serious infection of the throat or nasal cavity. For example, a persistent sinus infection, such as sinusitis, can often be to blame. Another culprit that leads to chronic bad breath is a severe blockage of the nasal passage, such as a deviated septum. Until the deviated septum is repaired with surgery, bad breath will likely continue. On a more serious note, chronic bad breath can be a symptom of life-threatening health problems, such as kidney failure or even liver failure.

There are a few other reasons why a person may suffer from chronic bad breath. These range from following a strict, high-protein diet, such as the Akins diet, to smoking. Additionally, mouthwash that has alcohol as a base can also cause it.

In many cases, once a person understands what is causing their chronic bad breath, they can work to treat and prevent it. For example, if you spend months eating foods that are primarily sources of protein, you just need to change your diet to cure it. The same goes for those sufferers who smoke or use certain alcohol-based mouthwashes: once the cause of the problem is discovered, the problem can be solved. If chronic bad breath is an indicator of a larger medical problem, treating that problem will treat the bad breath.

There are several preventative measures that can be taken for those concerned about developing chronic bad breath:
Brush and floss after meals and before bed
Use an alcohol-free mouthwash as a base
Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper a few times a day each
Chew sugarless gum, fennel seeds, fresh parsley, or cinnamon sticks
Eat balanced meals, not just those high in protein
Keep dentures, retainers, and other dental devices clean by soaking them in a dentist-recommended antibacterial solution
Drink a lot of water

By following these measures, visiting your dentist regularly, and communicating openly with your doctor about any other medical problems, chronic bad breath can be prevented or treated.
