What’s coiled cable?

The cable curl is a weight training exercise that works the biceps, pectoral muscles, and forearms. It can be done using a cable machine, but some argue that it modifies the natural movement of the lifter’s arms. Cable machines can be expensive, but most gyms have them.

A cable curl is a type of weight training exercise that is similar to a barbell or dumbbell curl, but instead of being done with free weights, it’s done with a cable machine. The general movement remains the same, regardless of which unit of resistance is used: a person will stand with their feet planted firmly planted at hip-width, and then grasp the weight with their arm(s) hanging down, elbows slightly bent. The lifter will then lift the weights by bending the elbow and curling the forearms in toward the biceps.

Like other types of curls, the cable curl is designed to work the muscles in your arms and chest. Strengthen and tone the biceps, pectoral muscles, and even the forearms to a lesser degree. Curls are basic exercises for a bodybuilder, and the method by which those curls are performed is a matter of preference. Many weightlifters prefer the cable wrap because it’s easy to adjust the weight on the resistance unit quickly, and weight stacks are unlikely to drop, wobble, or become unstable during exercise.

Others argue that a cable wrap modifies the natural movement of the lifter’s arms during the lift, as the body often leans back against the resistance of the cable unit and handle. Regular curls with dumbbells or barbells allow for a more natural center of balance, meaning a lifter is less likely to upset their natural lifting motion. This point is up for debate, and most lifters make up their minds about what type of curl works best for them. Other lifters use the cable curl in conjunction with other bicep exercises to get the most complete workout possible.

One of the drawbacks of the cable wrap is the inevitable need for a large cable machine to do the exercise. These machines can be quite expensive, so exercising at home can be expensive, but most gyms and fitness centers have the necessary machines to perform the curl. These machines feature replaceable attachments that can alter the position of the hand during the curl, meaning a lifter can theoretically curl one-handed using one handle and two-handed using a different handle. The same cable can be used for other types of exercises depending on the handle attachment and cable orientation.
