What’s Cold Storage?

Cold rooms are refrigerated storage spaces used to keep items fresh for delivery or storage. They prevent spoilage and can be used in hospitals, warehouses, and other locations. Insulation is important to maintain a certain temperature and prevent energy waste. Refrigerated trucks are used for transport of perishable goods, flowers, meats, and human organs. Domestic refrigerators also function as cold rooms. In the past, iceboxes were used but were inefficient. Cold rooms on ships prevent fish deterioration.

The term “cold rooms” means the storage of goods in a refrigerated atmosphere. This means that heat is removed from the container or storage room to help keep items – often food – fresh for delivery, long- or short-term storage, and so on. The cold room helps prevent spoilage of food and other consumer items and can be used in a variety of other environments, such as hospitals, warehouses, and any other location where products needing preservation are stored. When transporting goods, refrigerated trucks are often used to keep items cold throughout the transport process.

The room or containment system in which the items destined for the cold room are stored must be adequately insulated for several reasons: the insulation helps to maintain a certain temperature inside the storage unit; helps prevent cold air from escaping the unit, which would otherwise lead to higher refrigeration costs and wasted energy; and helps prevent temperature fluctuation outside the storage unit. In many cases the temperature inside the accumulator can be manipulated by regulating a thermostat; a cooling unit will then either blast cold air into the unit or shut down to allow the temperature to rise.

Cold rooms designed for the transport of goods can be attached to trucks. The trailer unit will be equipped with a cooling unit and the trailer itself will be well insulated to ensure a constant cold temperature regardless of the length of the journey. A generator may be required to power the cooling unit and packaging procedures should facilitate cooling of the transported products. This method is commonly used to transport perishable foods, flowers, meats, and even human organs for transplantation. The blood is also refrigerated during transport so it can be used for blood transfusions later.

Domestic refrigerators can also be considered cold rooms. Refrigerators are used to extend the life of food to be consumed and prevent spoilage of perishable foods. In the past, however, iceboxes were used to keep food cold, but this method was inefficient as regulating the temperature of such structures was often difficult. Some types of ships are equipped with cold rooms where temperatures can be regulated; in the past, the caught fish was stored in containers filled with ice and the ship would have to return to port before the ice could melt and allow the fish to deteriorate.
