Coral Castle is a mysterious North American landmark built with oolitic limestone by Edward Leedskalnin between 1921 and 1951. The rocks are held together by weight and precision, with no evidence of how they were moved. Leedskalnin claimed to have understood the job at hand or discovered the secrets of the pyramids. He built the castle for his true love, Agnes Scuffs, and made a living by giving tours and selling brochures. He was also an amateur scientist who wrote booklets on electricity and magnetism.
Coral Castle is a North American landmark built by Edward Leedskalnin in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is built with formed and cut pieces of oolitic limestone. Leedskalnin began construction of Coral Castle in 1921 and it was finished in 1951. The site has long been an interesting tourist attraction and remains quite a mystery. No one is sure how Leedskalnin moved and formed the stone pieces because he weighed less than 100 pounds (45 kg).
The site consists of over 1,000 pounds (454 kg) of oolitic limestone. It sports many features; such as walls over 8 m high, a two-story tower and numerous pieces of furniture, all made of oolitic limestone. What really interests many observers is that, although a man built Coral Castle, the rocks are only held together by weight. They are worked with such precision that no light passes between the appearances.
There is a great deal of controversy surrounding the construction of Coral Castle. Most of the rocks used to build the structure are gigantic, with the largest being many times heavier than all the stones used to build the Egyptian pyramids. One of Coral Castle’s most famous features is the gate to the facility. The gate weighs over nine tons (8.2 tons), but is mounted so tightly on its axle that it opens with the push of a single finger.
When asked how he built the castle without any help, Leedskalnin was very vague and cryptical. The answers he gave were varied, though he claimed he simply understood the job at hand. Other times Leedskalnin said he had discovered the secrets of the pyramids. Others claimed that Leedskalnin had rediscovered a lost scientific method for moving stones. A group of teenagers reported seeing him float the stones in place, however no evidence of this exists.
Leedskalnin was an eccentric and supposedly built Coral Castle for his true love, Agnes Scuffs, who left him a day before their wedding. After moving to America several years later, he began construction of Rock Gate Park, later known as Coral Castle. While the castle was being built, Leedskalnin made a living by giving tours of his estate and selling brochures.
Leedskalnin was also an amateur scientist. Although he received only a fourth grade education, he wrote numerous booklets on electricity, magnetism and how the two interact with the human body. This only furthers the belief that Leedskalnin used abnormal methods to build Coral Castle.
