What’s Cracker Bread?

[ad_1]

Crispbread is a thin, crunchy bread that is popular in many cultures, often served with sauces. It is a healthier alternative to traditional bread and can be found in supermarkets and specialty food shops.

Crispbread is a thin crusty bread that is often used as an accompaniment to meals in many different cultures, especially Turkish, Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. A favorite in the Scandinavian countries for many years, it has recently become popular in the UK and also enjoys considerable notoriety in the US. Often flavored lightly with herbs and spices, the cracker can be served with a variety of sauces. People may choose to break off a section to dip in the sauce or enjoy it without garnish.

Typically, cracker bread is made and served in sections that are slightly larger than the standard loaf of bread. The bread’s thin crusty texture provides a cracker-like crunch, yet is much thinner than any cracker product on the market today. For people who must eat some sort of bread with a meal but need to limit their grain intake, this can be a wonderful way to fill the craving and still consume much less in the way of bleached or wheat flours.

Crispbread is known by many different names around the world. In Scandinavia, the various forms of herbs may be called brot or knackebrot. People in the UK, with its sizable Indian population, often refer to it as lahvosh or lavosh. Various ethnic groups in the United States also call brown bread by different names, though it often appears on ethnic restaurant menus under this simple name.

Unlike salt crackers, cracker bread is generally not strong enough to be used alongside toppings such as peanut butter or cheese slices. It is also not intended to be used as a means to consume group dives. Simple sauces that are often thin and very spicy are often served with brown bread before the salad and entrée are brought to the table. It serves the same purpose as bread sticks, in that it provides people gathered around the table with something to enjoy while the main portions of the meal are prepared to be served.

Crispy bread isn’t limited to restaurants. A number of supermarkets and specialty food shops carry various types. Additionally, a number of ethnic grocery stores will carry three or four different varieties. Requiring no refrigeration, it can be stored in the cupboard and placed in the oven for a few moments to warm up and provide the crispness that makes bread so popular. Whether served as an appetizer or as an accompaniment to main portions of a meal, it can add a pleasant and healthy twist to any diet.
