Critical infrastructure refers to essential assets vital to the smooth functioning of society, including transportation, healthcare, finance, telecommunications, electricity, water supply, and sewage management. These infrastructures can be developed by the government and private investors.

Critical infrastructure refers to those essential assets which are considered vital to the continued smooth functioning of the company as an integrated entity. The term is mainly used by the government of various countries, states or local governments in describing the infrastructure framework within a place in the area. Some of this critical or critical infrastructure includes features such as the area’s existing transportation system, electricity and other energy requirements as well as the healthcare system. It may also include the financial framework, telecommunications, electricity and water supply.

Critical infrastructures are considered “critical” because they are considered essential for the effective functioning of society. For example, a good telecommunication network allows for easy flow of information between members of society in their private and business capacities. When people are able to communicate with each other, society will benefit in various forms. An example is when telephone service is available in a large part of the country, people will be able to conduct telephone meetings, obtain and transmit information, and generally stay in touch without having to travel long distances. This critical infrastructure can be developed by the government in partnership with private investors.

Another critical infrastructure is the health or medical facility in place in the society. This particular infrastructure is important simply for the benefits derived from having a good healthcare infrastructure. An example of healthcare infrastructure is the construction and maintenance of hospitals, including the provision of modern medical equipment to hospitals. It also includes establishing a financial health care system that underprivileged members of society can use to gain access to needed health care services.

Water supply is a critical infrastructure that involves the treatment and supply of good drinking water to different community areas as well as the construction and maintenance of water treatment tanks and water supply pipelines. Part of the water supply infrastructure includes the protection of water sources, including groundwater and surface sources from pollutants and other sources of contamination. Another aspect of water supply infrastructure is the construction of sewage and other projects that will help in wastewater management.

Electricity is a critical infrastructure because people depend on electricity for daily household and industrial activities. This type of infrastructure can include the construction and maintenance of dams, coal-fired power plants, and other sources of electricity generation, including solar power generation plants. It may also include the construction and maintenance of other alternative sources of electricity generation, such as windmills or nuclear power.
