Curriculum software is used by course instructors and students to manage courses. It includes modules for student management, course management, marking, and reporting. The software has expanded with the growth of online learning, making teaching more efficient and transparent.

Curriculum software is also known as course software or course management software. This type of software has two main audiences: course instructors and students. Course instructors use curriculum software to build their lesson plans, track assignments, quizzes and tests. Students enrolled in online courses use this type of software to access course work and communicate with the instructor.

There are four main modules in the curriculum software: student management, course management, marking and reporting. All four aspects are used together to provide a comprehensive tool for managing courses. Some software products also offer other modules for program administrators, with extensive reporting functionality and the ability to track issues and response times.

Student management in curriculum software includes tracking the courses the student has completed, prerequisites, past performance, and course records. Some programs include the ability to manage the student account, outstanding tuition, and fee assessments. Other programs keep these two aspects of student management separate.

The course management aspect is the most used of all modules. This tool is used to create all the different lesson plans, store recorded lectures, and provide access to lecture notes, required reading, and additional reference material. Online learners submit their assignments through this tool and may be asked to complete tests and quizzes online through this module.

Recording individual student grades, tracking class averages, and determining key areas of strength and weakness for the class are completed in the rankings module. This module is not available to students and can usually be linked directly to the course management module. When an assignment is marked, the grade module is automatically updated at the same time that the assignment is returned to the student.

Reports are required by both the individual course instructor and the department head or section supervisor. Administrative staff can also access this module to determine the number of students enrolled in a course, the level of instructor interaction, overall performance, dropout rate, and more. This type of data is needed for long-term planning, determining fees, and deciding whether there is sufficient interest to continue offering the course.

The field of curriculum software has expanded significantly over the past five to eight years, in parallel with the growing popularity of online learning. There is a significant amount of administration associated with teaching, and the curriculum software is designed to increase the efficiency and transparency of the entire process for the instructor, student, and administrator.
