A database management system (DBMS) is a software program that manages databases on a computer or network. Popular examples include Microsoft Access, FileMaker, DB2, and Oracle. DBMS has four essential elements: a modeling language, data structures, a data query language, and a mechanism for transactions.

As one of the older components associated with computers, the database management system, or DBMS, is a computer software program designed as a means of managing all the databases currently installed on the system’s hard drive or network. There are several types of database management systems, some of which are designed to properly supervise and control databases configured for specific purposes.

As the tool employed in the broad practice of database management, DBMS is marketed in many forms. Some of the more popular examples of these solutions include Microsoft Access, FileMaker, DB2 and Oracle. All these products provide for the creation of a series of rights or privileges that can be associated with a specific user. This means that you can designate one or more database administrators who can control each function, as well as provide various levels of administration rights to other users. This flexibility makes the task of using DBMS methods to supervise a system something that can be controlled centrally or assigned to several people.

There are four essential elements found in almost every example DBMS currently on the market. The first is the implementation of a modeling language that serves to define the language of each database hosted through the system. There are several approaches currently in use, with hierarchical, network, relational, and object examples. In essence, the modeling language guarantees the ability of the databases to communicate with the DBMS and therefore to operate on the system.

Secondly, data structures are also managed by the DBMS. Examples of data organized by this feature are profiles or individual records, files, fields and their definitions, and objects such as visual media. Data structures are what allow these systems to interact with data without causing damage to the integrity of the data itself.

A third component of DBMS software is the data query language. This element is involved in maintaining database security, monitoring the use of login data, assigning access rights and privileges, and defining policies that are to be used to add data to the system. The data query language works with data structures to make sure that it is more difficult to insert irrelevant data into any of the databases in use in the system.

Finally, a mechanism that allows transactions is an essential foundation for any DBMS. This helps to allow multiple and simultaneous access to the database by multiple users, prevents manipulation of a record by two users at the same time, and prevents duplicate records from being created.
