Development discourse is the communication process of discussing a country or region’s progress, often analyzed through metacommunication. Politicians use it to communicate a nation’s growth, but it can include misleading information. Terminology and language are important, as they can convey a particular perspective without betraying deeper meaning. Political analysts and scholars deconstruct jargon to determine true meaning.

Development discourse is a fairly specific aspect of communication that deals with the progress of countries and societies as it is described and told through conversation. In other words, this discipline addresses how people talk about development at some level, usually in a political or sociological way. As a general statement, development discourse refers to the communication process that occurs when two or more people talk about how a country or region is progressing. The term is often used, however, to refer more specifically to the language and terminology used to discuss these things and how such communication may or may not be effective.

There are several ways in which this type of discourse can be approached, although it is often used to analyze and consider forms of metacommunication. The term “meta” is often used to refer to a process that evaluates or refers to itself in some way. This means that “metacommunication” is effectively “communication about communication” or the language used to analyze the way people discuss ideas and talk to each other. Development discourse deals specifically with the terminology involved in conversations about how regions or countries develop and manage progress towards greater success and productivity.

Politicians often engage in development discourse, both in relation to issues of national importance and to global problems or triumphs that may arise. For example, analysis and discussion among political leaders or financial planners of a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is often used as a method of communicating that nation’s progress or growth. These types of conversations are a form of developmental discourse as these individuals communicate the changes that are occurring to indicate how a region is moving forward. Just like other forms of speech, however, this can include false or misleading information, and politicians sometimes approach a conversation or debate with a particular agenda.

One of the most important elements of this type of discourse, from an academic point of view, is the way in which certain terminology and language are used. Expressions like “fragile state” and “good governance” are often coined and used as a way that failure or progress can be discussed in language that doesn’t immediately convey meaning. This makes it easier for people to engage with developmental discourse in a way that expresses a particular perspective but does not betray a deeper meaning. Political analysts and scholars often deconstruct this type of jargon or terminology to determine the true meaning of a sentence and to enable others to better understand what is being said.
