Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) is a method of transmitting multimedia, radio, internet, and TV images to portable devices via digital radio transmissions. South Korea has fully adopted DMB-S and -T and is promoting their use abroad. DMB is designed to be compatible with DAB, while DVB-H is its main rival. Manufacturers anticipate tremendous sales growth.

Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) is a method of bringing multimedia, radio, Internet and television images to portable devices via digital radio transmissions. It can be transmitted both via satellite (DMB-S) and terrestrial (DMB-T). The transmission is received by a telephone which may be installed in mobile phones, laptops, navigation systems or digital cameras. Its use is limited, as the United States and many other countries, as of 2006, have not adopted it.

Digital media broadcasting, both satellite and terrestrial, was adopted by South Korea in 2005. It is capable of operating on radio frequency bands III (VHF) and L (UHF). Terrestrial broadcasts use some of the most sophisticated video and audio coding available to provide the best quality picture. The satellite broadcast is capable of covering an entire country and is already being used by TU Media, a component of South Korean communications company SK Telecom, to deliver more than 12 video and 20 audio channels to subscribers on the go. DMB-T services provide seven video, 13 audio and eight data channels.

South Korea, with one of the highest numbers of Internet users in the world, has not only fully adopted both DMB-S and -T, but is also keen to promote their use abroad. South Korean conglomerates such as LG Electronics and Samsung conduct frequent international demonstrations.

Portable digital video broadcasting (DVB-H) is this technology’s main rival. In promoting this technology during a 3GSM conference in Cannes, LG Electronics pointed out that DVB-H incurs higher infrastructure costs, as the technology is less compatible with Eureka 147 Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), the standard for broadcasting digital radio commonly used all over the world. DMB is designed to be compatible with DAB. In fact, it uses DAB as the transported medium for image streaming.

However, most of the technology components required for Digital Media Broadcasting and Digital Video Broadcasting are similar. Having originated in Europe, DVB is an internationally accepted set of standards for digital television. There are four formats in which it is available: Satellite (DVB-S), Terrestrial (DVB-T), Cable (DVB-C) and Handheld (DVB-H).

Manufacturers of the chips, phones and other technologies needed to fully implement this innovation in digital entertainment are anticipating tremendous sales growth. The success in South Korea alone, with a projected 6.6 million service subscribers by 2010, suggests that the use of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting will be further expanded.
