What’s dry resin?

Dry resin is treated to reduce moisture content. It forms a strong bond when cured and is used in manufacturing and construction. Resin pieces are dried, formed into cakes, and cut into shapes for storage. Dry resin is used for veneers and as an adhesive. Amber is a well-known dry resin often used in jewelry.

The dry resin is treated with resin to reduce the moisture content to a low level. Resins are hardened substances that melt when heated and burn when exposed to high heat. Previously used only to refer to substances of plant origin, resins can now be synthetic substances exhibiting the correct properties. Although it takes a long time to cure and loses its moisture when dried naturally in air, dry resin is often used in manufacturing and construction because it forms an exceptionally strong bond once the curing process has finished. Outside of nature, dry resins are most often seen in the form of dried varnish or wood glue preparations.

In manufacturing, the resin pieces are often dried and formed into cakes for easier storage. When a resin is dried, it is first heated to soften and melt into a mass. After the resin has been heated, manufacturers use a centrifuge to extract the water from the resin. The still hot and slightly dried resin is then pumped through an extruder, shaping it and further drying it. The shaped and dried resin is then cut or ground into shapes that make it easier to ship and store, usually in uniform pellets, but sometimes in the form of pellets or powders.

Often applied to enhance the appearance of a surface, veneers are thin coatings bonded over the original service using dry resin. These wood siding is usually strips of attractive decorative wood applied as a face over existing wood. The carpenters buy the dry resin in powder form. The carpenter mixes batches of the powder with water and applies it to the thin strips of wood used to create the veneer finish. This process is used in creating artwork made from inlaid wood veneers.

Resin-based glue designed to fix wood can also be called resin glue, epoxies and aliphatic resin. When a resin is applied as an adhesive, it becomes a dry resin when it dries. Dry resin should ideally have a moisture level of less than one percent of the total weight of the resulting resin.

Most resins have no scent until heated. A well-known dry resin is amber, which is the fossilized resin of a plant often used in jewelry. One method used to authenticate amber is by heating a pin and touching it to the amber. Real amber should smell slightly woody when the pin heats the amber. This method is not completely accurate because some amber forgers put a coating on the outside of the counterfeit amber designed to give the fake amber a deceptive amber smell.
