What’s duct tape?

Joint tape is used to finish drywall joints before painting. There are two types: paper tape and self-adhesive mesh tape. The process involves applying drywall mud, smoothing the tape, and sanding it down. Joint tape is also used for repairing holes in drywall. Joint compound dries quickly, so it’s important to strategize before mixing.

Joint tape is a product that is used to finish drywall joints in preparation for painting. Putting drywall up is a relatively simple process, but preparing the joints for painting is actually a bit tricky, unless you don’t mind a sloppy-looking wall. The process of smoothing the seams so they become invisible after painting is known as taping, as it involves applying masking tape to the seams. This product is available from many hardware stores and home improvement stores.

There are two different types of duct tape available. The first is a paper tape product. To use masking tape, people apply a layer of drywall mud to the joint, smooth the tape over it, and then add a light coat to the surface of the tape. The second coat of mud doesn’t completely cover the tape, but it does help smooth it out. The tape and mud are allowed to dry completely before being sanded down to smooth. At the same time, the mud will be used to address other cracks and holes that may be visible after painting. This can be a painstaking process, but the alternative is a bad paint job.

The mesh joint tape is self-adhesive. It is applied to the wall as-is and then covered with a light coat of grouting mud, just like with masking tape. Once the mud has had a chance to dry, you can proceed to sanding. Once the drywall has been prepped, it can be primed and painted. Taking the time to properly prepare your drywall is important, because once the paint starts going on the wall, it’s much harder to fix problems and mistakes. At the very least, a fix can be messy, and at worst, it can be impossible.

In addition to being used in new construction and refinishing rooms, joint tape is also used when holes in drywall need to be repaired, to smooth the edges of the patch used to replace missing or damaged drywall. After the hole has been repaired and taped, it can be painted over. Matching the existing wall can be a challenge, so the entire wall may need to be painted.

When working with joint mud, more properly known as joint compound, it’s important to be aware that the mud dries quickly. Usually people mix small amounts at a time to avoid waste, and have to constantly clean the knives used to apply it, so the joint compound doesn’t dry onto the blade. It helps to lay everything out and strategize before mixing a batch of joint compound, as once the compound is mixed, the clock starts ticking.
