What’s Filling?

Backfill is natural material used to fill voids after construction or excavation. It stabilizes mines, protects building foundations, fills trenches, and stabilizes pipes. It’s environmentally friendly, practical, and saves time and money.

The backfill is mostly natural material that is used to fill in some voids left after construction or excavation efforts. Usually, backfill is a combination of stone, earth, and other materials left over after the main portion of the project is completed. However, if required, the backfill material can be transported to the construction site.
There are several applications where the filling process is useful. It has to do with maintaining the integrity of a mine. When minerals or precious metals are extracted from the mine, fill materials are used to fill and patch the areas where the excavation has taken place. This process helps keep the mine shafts stable and relatively safe for future excavation efforts by limiting the possible aftermath of seismic activity in the immediate area.

It is also common to fill in the area immediately around a building’s foundation, such as a house. Using the compacted earth and stone that has been excavated to create a smooth site for the building to be constructed, the fill is stacked against the finished foundation. The result is that water will tend to drain from the foundation and help minimize the chances of rapid deterioration which would lead to the weakening of the entire structure.

Backfill can also be used to fill in a trench that was created for some purpose, but is no longer needed. By pushing loose soil and stones into the trench, you can level the area again, especially if you use heavy equipment to pack the backfill tightly. Since the fill materials are usually natural, the area can also be seeded, allowing grass or plants to take root easily and cover the area where the trench was once located.

Drilling operations sometimes also use backfill. Once the pipes have been placed for a well, the soil and stones removed as part of the installation can be placed back around the outside of the pipe. The compacted soil helps stabilize the hose and reduces the possibility of the hose bending under pressure during use.

In most situations, the use of filler is not only environmentally friendly, but also very practical. The materials that make up the fill are usually excavated from a nearby location and would have to be hauled out of the area if not in use. Also, using bulk materials means that synthetics don’t have to be bought and transported to the area to achieve the same results. From this point of view, backfill helps save time and money, both of which are important when doing construction, landscaping or mining work.
