What’s fine art photography?

[ad_1]

Photography is now considered a fine art, with fine art photography being intended for gallery and museum display as an expression of the artist’s vision. It was not fully accepted until the mid-20th century, but has since become a respected modern art, with large-scale prints and glossy finishes. The Aperture Foundation and MoMA have played a major role in promoting fine art photography.

Before the invention of photography, the fine arts consisted mainly of painting, drawing, and sculpture. However, photography is now considered to be in the same class as these fine arts. Like paintings, photographs rely on composition and perspective.

Fine art photography is a type of photography created with the intention of producing gallery and museum quality work. Furthermore, it should be seen as an expression of the artist’s vision. Fine art photography is distinct from photojournalism in that it is not created to support another work, such as a journalistic newsroom. It is also distinct from commercial and fashion photography in that it is not intended to be used to sell a product. Despite the distinction between these forms of photography, there are some interesting overlaps.

Photography was not fully accepted as an art until after the mid-20th century. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that it became acceptable to frame a photograph for a museum or gallery exhibit. Prior to this period, prints of photographs were simply pasted onto a board and hung. Alternatively, they were printed with a white border and attached to the walls instead of hanging.

Since the middle of the 20th century, fine art photography has gone from being a less-than-accepted medium that received only the roughest of paintings, to a well-respected modern art that is generally displayed with great respect. Between the 1970s and 1990s, it became increasingly accepted and popular to print large-scale photographs, give them a glossy finish, and hang them in frames as if they were paintings.

The increased scale and improved framing of fine art photography speaks directly to the medium’s increased popularity and acceptance. There are two American organizations that have done a great deal of work to promote fine art photography. The first is the Aperture Foundation. The Aperture Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to fine art photography. The organization publishes a quarterly magazine called Aperture. The organization also publishes books on fine art photography.

The second major force that has supported fine art photography is the Museum of Modern Art in New York, known as MoMA. Even in the 1960s, when fine art photography was first being recognized, the Museum of Modern Art featured shows that promoted this genre.
