Floriculture involves creating floral arrangements, flower care, sales, and delivery. There are two types of florists: wholesalers and retailers. Florists need skills in design, care, sales, and marketing, as well as knowledge of flower lore and symbolism. Floristry styles vary, and education can be obtained through universities, colleges, or apprenticeships.

Floriculture is the professional art of creating floral arrangements. It also covers flower care and handling, flower sales and display, and flower delivery. The floral industry is the lifeblood of floriculture, although the term generally refers to the growing, caring and selling of flowers. There are two main types of florists in floristry – the wholesaler and the retailer. Wholesale florists grow and sell flowers in bulk to retailers, while retail florists supply flowers, floral arrangements, and related floristry supplies to consumers.

Florists must learn a variety of skills to work as professionals in the field. These skills include the design of various flower arrangements, the care and preservation of fresh flowers, and the sale and marketing of floral products. Floristry is sometimes referred to as floral design, and many florists believe that there is an art to the proper arrangement of flowers.

In addition to practical skills, knowledge of flower lore and symbolism is useful for florists. When working in an area inhabited by people from multiple cultures, this knowledge will be invaluable when designing arrangements for clients. Color meanings, holidays when certain flowers are used, and the various styles of floristry are also necessary for aspiring florists.

Floristry styles vary from location to location, but florists should be familiar with the primary styles, particularly in the geographic area. The three most common styles of floristry include High Style, English Garden and Ikebana. High Style is the most popular in the United States and is characterized by symmetry, negative space and linear designs. The English garden style is popular in England and consists of the use of seasonal and garden flowers, as well as large displays to be seen from all angles. The Ikebana style originates from Japan and includes triangular arrangements that emphasize simplicity and beauty.

The field of professional floristry is not difficult to violate. It’s a growing business in the United States, which has led to an increased demand for gyms that teach the trade. Many universities and colleges now offer courses in floriculture through their horticulture departments. Floral design workshops are also offered in many large cities.

Potential students interested in a floral design career can learn through higher education establishments, or even from an experienced flower retailer. Some florists may be willing to take an apprentice and pass on the craft without the need for higher education. However, the knowledge gained in these situations may not be enough to secure employment elsewhere.
