What’s fractional T1?

[ad_1]

T1 is a fast transmission line with 24 channels, but expensive. Fractional T1 is a cheaper option, allowing customers to use only a few channels while still enjoying the speed and security of T1. Data travels at rocketing speeds and is dedicated to the customer.

In the field of data transmission, one of the big names is T1. This is a type of transmission line that constantly delivers a large, detailed amount of data at lightning-fast speeds. A T1 line has 24 channels, each of which can transfer data at a rate of 64 kilobits per second.

Because it has 24 channels, the T1 line is usually expensive. Businesses with large amounts of data transfer happening multiple times a day often choose to pay for a full T1 line because it’s cost effective to do so. However, another option is available. Customers can now implement a fractional T1 line, which is, as the name suggests, just a portion of a T1 line.

A split T1 line allows a customer to use only a certain number of the 24 channels on a T1 line. In a sense, the customer who pays for this type of line leases the use of those channels. This type of business decision certainly makes sense if the customer requires only a few channels, but wants to take advantage of the speed, accuracy and security provided by a T1 line. Despite using only a few or perhaps more channels, a fractional T1 does not suffer from slower or less intense data rates or performance.

Probably unsurprisingly, fractional T1 routinely costs a fraction of the full line T1. Providers typically charge customers for each channel used, and the costs correspond to the fraction of the entire T1 line that a customer is leasing. A main attraction of a T1 line is that it provides a direct connection between your home or office and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). As such, it is considered more secure than other types of transmission. Since a fractional T1 is a T1 without all channels used, it enjoys this type of direct connection as well as security.

Another main attraction of a T1 line – and one that makes the sale for most people – is its speed. Data transmitted over a T1 line, and by extension fractional T1, travels at rocketing speeds compared to ordinary home modems—60 times faster in some cases. This guaranteed speed is made possible in part by the proprietary nature of the T1. Unlike cable, DSL, and ISDN, T1 and fractional T1 lines are dedicated transmission methods, meaning no one else can use your T1.
