Gothic clothing is typically black and includes feminine and vintage skirts for women and historical and modern styles for men. Death and dark icons are common themes, and black and silver are the most common colors for clothing and jewelry. Gothic clothing can express gothic ideals and philosophies, and coordinating outfits is common among gothic couples.

Gothic clothing, in its most common incarnation, is black clothing paired with gothic-style makeup and accessories. The clothing itself is typically made in one of several Gothic styles, but black is almost always the most common and dominant color. Women’s clothing can include very feminine and vintage skirts, or it can be as modern as other clothing styles. For men, historical and modern styles are also popular. Thematically, death and dark icons are often a big part of what makes gothic clothing look gothic.

Almost any primarily black outfit can be considered goth clothing if worn by a person who is part of the goth subculture. The characteristics that make gothic clothing more strikingly gothic are not shared by all sects of the gothic subculture. For example, some members of this culture wear Gothic clothing designed to resemble period pieces from the Victorian era, sometimes with modified ghoulish accessories or anachronistic fabrics. On the opposite end of the spectrum, gothic clothing can be made entirely out of synthetic fabrics and zippers.

In general, black and silver are the most common colors for gothic clothing and jewelry. Bold colors can be worn in an ensemble, but what makes an outfit gothic is a mostly monochrome arrangement of clothing with silver or black jewelry. Belts and belts are common parts of gothic costumes, even when these items are not functional.

Often gothic clothing expresses an interest in certain gothic ideals and philosophies. Death, for example, is a common theme in gothic subcultures, so coffins and other death-related imagery are often seen on shirts and jewelry. Spiders, bones, and thorns are often a part of gothic clothing as well. Clothing related to gothic bands or artists is also considered acceptable in most gothic subcultures.

Women’s clothing is often more elaborate than men’s clothing, but this is not always the case with regard to Victorian Gothic clothing and some other sects. Fishnets, lace, and other feminized materials are often worn by men. Some gothic men wear skirts or kilts, and many wear tight leggings and shirts. These clothing choices do not reflect sexual orientation in this case.

Men and women who are members of gothic subcultures often work to coordinate outfits to express a relationship. Chains connecting partners, for example, are common in some sects. Otherwise, matching fabrics or themes can be used to make a couple seem more like a couple. These dress habits are somewhat unique among fashion movements and can be upsetting to viewers.
