What’s Greek beer?

[ad_1]

Greek beer is a small industry compared to other countries, with the most popular brand being Mythos. Other Greek beers include Athenian and Marathon, while Ouzo is the most common liquor. Alpha beer has been relaunched with a new name, Alfa Hellenic Beer.

Greek beer is a form of grain alcohol brewed in the country of Greece by a rather small collection of local distilleries compared to other beer-producing nations. Greek drinks in the spirits category in general tend to be complemented by many imported varieties of beer, while local Greek drinks range from a range of Greek wines, such as the famous Retsina white wine, to varieties of sweet coffee and herbal teas. The most common Greek liquor that tends to overshadow local Greek brewing is that of anise-flavored brandy known as Ouzo, and its anise-flavored counterpart is popular on the island of Crete, known as Raki.

The most popular types of Greek beer have historical or mythological names associated with them, such as Mythos beer, which was created in 1997, although the brewery that has been making it since 1970. It is considered one of the few authentic Greek brews and is popular both locally and with foreign visitors. As of 2002, approximately 110,000,000 liters (29,000,000 gallons) of beer were being produced annually. Another popular Greek beer produced by the Mythos company is Golden, as well as several locally brewed foreign German beers, such as Kaiser and Henninger. Mythos beer company is also the leading wine producer in Greece and a major importer of foreign beers from countries such as Australia, Denmark and Ireland.

Mythos is the most popular Greek beer and is exported to Europe, Australia, and the North American nations of the United States and Canada, but is considered a relatively new light beer. Athenian beer has been brewed in Greece since 1977, named after the Greek goddess Athena, who represents wisdom, fertility and art. While Athenian beer has the same alcohol content as Mythos at 5%, it has a unique apple and pear flavor. Marathon beer is even older than Athenian, having been first distilled in 1971, and has a light citrus and spicy aroma. Zorbas was another popular Greek beer produced by the same Athenian brewing company, but it is no longer in production and is said to have an aftertaste of rye.

Another small production of Greek beer that is allegedly difficult to spot anywhere in Greece or other nations is the Alpha brand, or Alfa. It first appeared on the Greek beer market in 1961 and was discontinued for a time, but has since been relaunched and has been around since 2006. It has a new fancier name of Alfa Hellenic Beer, which it gives it a more familiar international recognition as a true Greek beer. It is considered a light and golden beer like Mythos which represents the authentic tradition of Greek beers in general.
