Craft manufacturing is the process of making goods by hand, resulting in unique items with higher production values. Before mass production, all handicrafts were created one by one using simple tools and the knowledge and skill of the worker. Handcrafted goods are often one-of-a-kind, but can be more difficult to repair than mass-produced items. Handicraft production is still used today for items such as furniture and cabinetry, and is practiced in areas where industrialization is limited.

Craft manufacturing is a method of making goods by hand, often with simple tools. This type of one-off production was in widespread use before the Industrial Revolution and is still practiced around the world. Unlike mass production, handcrafted production results in items that are each unique in small ways, as they are handcrafted one at a time. Handcrafted wares can vary in quality, although they are often thought to have higher production values than mass-produced versions. It is often possible for a craftsman to achieve certain effects or levels of detail using techniques that are not viable in mass production.

Before the days of mass production, all handicrafts were created one by one using the artisanal process. New workers in a field would typically be apprenticed to a master, from whom they would learn their trade. Goods were produced by hand using relatively simple tools and without automated processes, so the knowledge and skill of the worker was instrumental in the quality of the final product. Much of the craft making done today is the work of hobbyists, although some craftsmen still make a living off it.

One of the major defining factors of handcrafted goods is that each end product is unique in some way. Although a master craftsman typically produces finished products that meet general specifications, aesthetics and function are often considered more important than perfect uniformity. This can often be desirable from the perspective of a consumer interested in one-of-a-kind items, although it can have drawbacks if the product needs to be repaired. Goods composed of identical, replaceable parts are easier and cheaper to repair, and this is something that handicraft production cannot easily offer.

The automotive industry is one example that started with handcrafted manufacturing but transitioned into mass production. When every car was a handmade product, it was necessary to create new specific spare parts for each vehicle. This made it very expensive to own and maintain an automobile and led to the industrial adoption of mass production techniques. Once every part that made up a vehicle was identical to the parts of any other vehicle of the same make, the cost of repairs and maintenance became significantly lower.

In cases where absolute uniformity of a product is not required, handicraft production has some advantages over mass-produced goods. Furniture, cabinetry, and other woodwork is often handcrafted due to the level of detail and quality the method allows. The handicraft is also practiced around the world in areas where industrialization has been limited.
