What’s Heavy Equipment?

Heavy equipment includes civil engineering, construction, agricultural, and forestry vehicles. Many use hydraulic components and advanced electronics. Applications vary from military to infrastructure and construction projects, requiring specialized maintenance by trained technicians.

Heavy vehicles and large machinery are generally referred to as heavy equipment. This term includes civil engineering vehicles, utility vehicles from construction equipment to agricultural and forestry implements, and equipment used for heavy transportation, such as rail cars, semi-trailers, trailers, and dump trucks. A piece of heavy equipment is generally designed specifically for a purpose, although some gear may be used in more than one capacity. Most use hydraulic components and today’s designs are becoming even more refined with technological advances such as sophisticated electronics. Many modern heavy equipment tools rely on computers to operate and are maintained using computers that test working parts and report specific problems.

The use of heavy equipment varies in different applications, from civil or infrastructure and military engineering, to other heavy construction developments and agricultural and forestry projects. Military equipment includes everything from tanks to aircraft carriers, while civil engineering applications use tools from large cranes to much smaller tools like jackhammers. Infrastructure projects often include the repair and maintenance of highways, bridges and overpasses, and projects such as interstate beltways.

Heavy construction generally refers to the construction of playgrounds or parks as well as large buildings such as office complexes or shopping malls. Backhoes, bulldozers, and other earthmoving equipment are often used to break up soil, while cranes are often used to place large beams and framing members. Agricultural interests include farming, which uses heavy equipment such as tractors, combines, reapers, and balers. Landscaping can be included in both agricultural and forestry categories, using equipment such as log splitters, tillers, mowers, chippers, and stump pullers.

While advances in technology can make heavy equipment more functional and reliable, they also make caring for individual parts much more complicated. Sophisticated technology has created a specialized field when it comes to troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of heavy equipment. Few of the people who own or rent these tools can work with them anymore. Repairs from simple to extensive maintenance, and even routine, often need to be performed by specially trained mechanics and technicians.
