Holistic yoga combines the principles of holism and yoga to create a lifestyle approach that focuses on an individual’s entire routine. It is believed that most diseases and ailments can be treated with the holistic approach of yoga. The main types of yoga are Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, and Bikram.

Holistic yoga, while not an official type, is more of a lifestyle approach that combines the ideal of holism and the practice of yoga. It focuses on a person’s entire routine, rather than the physical practice of yoga alone. The student learns to apply the key concepts of holism and yoga to their daily life, thus creating a lifestyle. Many yoga students already practice holistic yoga without necessarily realizing it, due to the key principles that yoga teaches practitioners to incorporate into their lives.

Yoga is the Sanskrit word for “union,” and it refers to the mind-body connection. The practice is over 5,000 years old, and although its original has been placed in India, it is widely practiced. The terms used to describe the types of yoga come from the Hindu Vedas, or spiritual writings. It was developed as a means to cleanse and refine the body for proper energy transmission.

The main types of yoga are Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, and Bikram. The “eight limbs” of yoga refer to which parts of the body and to what types of breathing the individual postures are intended for. Yoga postures, or asanas, are combined with individual breathing exercises to harmonize the body and speed up the mind-body connection. Traditionally, Western medicine does not focus on the importance of the interrelationship between the mental and the physical.

Proper yoga should be practiced in a sequence, keeping in mind the ultimate purpose of meditation and concentration. First, breathing and stretching exercises are perfected. This requires the student to take his outer senses and draw them inward. The student then focuses her concentration on an individual element, such as a candle flame. Ultimately, and this can take years of constant dedication and practice, the student becomes a teacher and is able to achieve inner peace. This requires one to completely withdraw from the world and achieve a feeling of timelessness.

Holism is the idea that the parts of a system are not alone and that they depend on the whole. It is a concept that requires looking at the whole system to address the problem of an individual part, and the effects of one part will affect the system. The lifestyle concept of holism is that the body, in general, is affected by all the parts together.

In holism, it is believed that every part and function of the body has an effect on the whole body. It’s important not to do or consume anything that could have a negative impact on one part because it will have a negative impact on the whole body. Yoga, deep breathing, stress management, flexibility, strength, and mental clarity are intertwined as part of the holistic yoga lifestyle.

Holistic yoga combines ideal holism with yoga. An individual is encouraged to look at his entire state, both mental and physical, in order to address any personal issues he is having. It is believed that most diseases and ailments are the result of imbalances and can be treated with the holistic approach of yoga. Holistic yoga also falls under the umbrella of alternative medicine.
