HTML is a markup language for creating structures and links on the web. HTML editor software comes in three interfaces: text editor, HTML object editor, and WYSIWYG. It’s important to choose the appropriate HTML version when using an editor.

HTML is a markup language derived from SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language, a language widely used for creating structures for presenting documents on the World Wide Web, as well as for creating links between them. A defined set of rules and tags is what makes up HTML, which is often compared to XHTML (EXtensible HyperText Markup Language) and characterized as less strict. HTML editor software is a computer program for creating and editing HTML. The HTML editor software can be a standalone application or incorporated into a complete web design software application, along with an XHTML editor, a JavaScript® editor, and a Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) editor.

The HTML editor software comes with three different interfaces. One is a text editor, where only the HTML language is entered and where only HTML is displayed, and this type of HTML editor software may include a syntax highlighting editor or have validation and other features available. Menus for tagging and spell checking are popular. The second type is called an HTML object editor and allows for the expansion and collapse of HTML objects and properties, among other features.

The third type of HTML editor is What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG), pronounced /WIH zee wig/. A WYSIWYG HTML editor has a graphical user interface (GUI) to make web development easier for people who don’t know HTML well or at all, as well as allowing designers to see the effects of their coding. Some programs only have a WYSIWYG editor, while others allow the user to switch between a WYSIWYG editor and a text editor. However, code created solely within a WYSIWYG interface may require modification to meet standards, and a user who never looks at the code may run into problems.

When working with HTML editor software, it is important to choose the language that will be used and distinguish between HTML 4.01 Transitional and HTML 4.01 Strict, for example. In 2010, while most HTML editor software catered to HTML 4, HTML 5 was starting to be implemented. This means that for the foreseeable future, users of HTML editor software will need to take extra care in choosing the appropriate HTML version.
