Huarache is a traditional Mexican food with a long history. With its roots in indigenous Nahuatl culture, huarache is both a type of flat pancake and a type of sandal. Locals in the places where this food originated refer to these hits as huaraches because they are shaped like a sandal.

The basic material for this food is called masa. This is a word for a type of corn paste made from dried corn kernels. This material is often called harina or trigo in Spanish, words that translate to “flour” in English. Huarache is made from masa and stretched into thin, flat shapes.

Many different types of ingredients can be placed on top of the flat urache. These include various types of sauces or salsa, which are commonly made with tomatoes, garlic, onions and herbs such as coriander, as well as different types of hot peppers. Along with the sauce, the cooks will place different types of meat on top of the huaraches. Some of these include pork, beef tongue or chicken.

In addition to meat, some cooks use eggs to add protein to huaraches. These could be combined with various types of cheese. Soft, light cheeses are commonly added to this dish, in part to balance out the very tangy taste of the sauce. In addition to these items, many of these dishes might include types of beans such as black beans or pinto beans. These provide additional protein to the dish. Some varieties also include lettuce or other fresh greens. All the ingredients can make this dish a bit difficult to eat when served as street food or in other less formal scenarios.

To cook huaraches, cooks commonly place this paste on a griddle or pan. A light oil coating helps crisp the outside of this dish. Due to the thin shape, these pieces of dough don’t need to be cooked for very long, making this dish a bit easy to prepare. However, the production of huaraches requires a flat grill and other culinary accommodations, and while some vendors are able to generate these foods in very primitive configurations, other restaurants use more complex cooking equipment to prepare large volumes of these foods for consumers.
